820 visa granted, waiting time for 801?

Hi, I'm having a little bit of trouble understanding exactly when the 2-year waiting period for the 801 visa starts. On the DIAC website, it states that the temporary visa (820) is valid for two years from the time the application was lodged, at which time the 801 visa may be granted if I still qualify. Other sources, however, state that the waiting period is two years from the time the visa was granted. I applied for my visa on 8 April 2010 and it was not granted until 24 Jan 2011. Sooo...does that mean that the 9 1/2 months to took to get the visa will be included in my waiting time?

In theory (as I know these processes can be rather unpredictable) should I expect my 801 to be decided around 7 Apr 2010 or closer to 24 Jan 2013?

Does anyone have any personal insight into this? I mean, my instinct is to just assume that what is on the DIAC website is correct, but through this process I've learned not to make any assumptions.

Hi there!!

When I handed in my visa application, the guy I spoke to said the two years starts from that day, so around two years after you handed it in, you should receive a letter telling you what they want you to provide to get permanent residency!!

Hope this is of some help!!

Thanks for your reply! That was indeed the answer I was hoping for. Cheers!

I somehow hadn't seen the 2nd Stage visa processing thread until a few minutes ago. The variations in the waiting times are a bit scary but I guess I just have to keep my fingers crossed!
