Health insurance required before applying for 820

Hi,

My now wife (came to Australia from Jakarta on a PMV which was granted in May this year) is about to lodge her application for an 820 Partner visa and I can see that one of the requirements is to have health insurance ?

What insurer have others used for this ? Is the basic level of cover adequate or does she need to have something more comprehensive ? Before providing cover will be company request she do a health check etc ? She is 24 years old and has no medical problems etc. Is it usually a lengthy process to get health insurance ?

I thought that as soon as she applies for the 820 she will be covered by Medicare ? How come health insurance is needed ? I've been living here all my wife (born here etc) and do no have health insurance.

Any advice in this matter appreciated.

Thanks

Nizar

Not sure why health insurance is required. My husband didn't have any and applied for Medicare straight after lodging his 820 and we were never asked about health insurance.

Make sure you lodge before 1 January

Its about a third down the page under 'Health and character requirements"
Partner visa (subclasses 820 and 801) document checklist

So you think we can ignore this point ? Or it wasn't on the checklist page at the time when your husband applied ? Maybe its a new requirement ?

And yes will def be lodging very soon. Could actually lodge this week if she didn't need health insurance as we already have all copies certified and all photos printed out etc. Just this issue I need to sort out.

Honestly I can't remember if it was on the check list or not.

I wouldn't bother about the health insurance because she will have Medicare before they even look at the application and one of the requirements is Medicare.

Once you lodge your application, you can apply for Medicare. You should receive paperwork from Medicare as evidence of this, which you can then upload.
