marital status on visa application form

Why is it necessary for visa application - am divorced but would prefer to tick the "never married" box is there a way of anyone checking?

Hi. Firstly, what visa are you applying for?

You should never lie to immigration, no matter what reason. Without knowing what visa you are applying for, immigration would want to know whether you are married or not because you might want your partner to be a second applicant for the visa, they would want to know if you wanted your spouse to migrate too.

Say that you are divorced, it's nothing to worry about really, and there's no need to put "never married".

yes there is a way of checking, if you are planning to be married again then many countries require a Single Status Certificate or a document that searches the marriage records of a person and declares them single or not, if you were married they would know. What is the big deal about being divorced, I am and it has never affected me or our visa application? :?
