A few questions regarding EOI & Skilled Independent visa

Hi.
I'm in the early stages of preparation for a submission of an EOI for a Skilled Independent visa. I have a few questions that I'm hoping you guys may be able to help me with.

Is it unusual for a regular British citizen to take the IELTS test in order to boost the number of points they have? If I already have enough points to apply for the visa, will the extra points gained from a high IELTS result give me any advantage?

How necessary is a migration agent? I don't particularly want to spend a lot of money paying a migration agent to do something that I feel capable of doing myself. Is it usual for people to underestimate the complexity of the application process? Did anybody on here try to do it alone and then later wish they hadn't?

Finally... my biggest concern.... how much proof of previous full-time employment is required in order to obtain a skills assessment from TRA? I appreciate that's an impossible question to answer, but I'm worried that despite having the experience and fully satisfying the requirements, I'm going to struggle to prove my previous employment history. I no longer have any old payslips and I left my previous employer (of many years) on very bad terms after a change of management. I'm still in contact (and on good terms) with a previous manager (who I worked alongside for the bulk of my employment at the company) but since he no longer works there, I feel his assistance will be of little benefit.

It's incredibly common for UK citizens to sit the IELTS in order to get enough points to qualilfy for a visa. If you already have enough points without it, it may be unnecessary for you. But a lot of applicants need the extra points to get to the required 60.

If you feel capable of doing the required research, getting the assessments, completing the forms, etc. then you may not need an agent. Many people feel intimidated by the process, or want the comfort of having someone look through their documents and let them know what they may be missing or how to present their information.

As far as I know, you do need enough evidence of previous employment to prove you did work for the period you said you did, and that your role included the responsibilities of the occupation you're applying under. Hopefully others can give more guidance as to what this evidence can be made up of.
