Why do the minimum 189 points change so often and what is the best time to apply?

Hi,

I am ultimately going for the 189 visa and I have 65 points at the moment. I was checking the SkillSelect rounds from the past financial year and I notices that for my chosen occupation ICT Business Analyst the minimum cut off points change almost every month varying from 60 to 70 points.

What is the reason for that? And is there a best time when to apply for EOI with my 65 points to ensure I actually get invited?

I am hoping someone will be able to shed a light on this matter.

Thanks!

The minimum to be eligible is always 60, but since DIBP will sort the EOIs by number of points and then submission date, often the invitation round gets filled by higher point applicants. If you can increase your points, you'd move up the queue otherwise you can just wait and hope to eventually get invited.

The best time to submit an EOI is as soon as possible so that you can get in the queue.

With each invitation round DIBP is currently sending out 1400 invitations. For certain occupations, including ICT Business Analysts, there is a very high demand from applicants. In other words you are in a very competitive occupational group.

As there are many expressions of interest continually being lodged for your occupation, DIBP sets a quota for the maximum number of invitations which are offered to applicants in each round. DIBP describe this as offering places on a 'pro-rata' basis.

Therefore let's assume (for example) that DIBP allocate a maximum of 1% of the 1400 invitations to your occupational group. Therefore in a particular round of invitations only 14 invitations will be offered to applicants in your occupation. These 14 places will go to the 14 highest scoring applicants, and in the case where applicants have the same points score, the places go to EOIs that were lodged earlier. Therefore although some EOIs with the minimum score of 60 will be offered places, it is unlikely that a score of 60 will sufficient in the high demand, pro-rated, occupations like your own. Those higher cutoff scores are reflected in the published scores in each round. see https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Work/Skil/3-august-2016-round-results

Therefore as Maggie-May24 has advised, the best way to make yourself more competitive is to lodge your EOI as early as possible. If after lodging your initial EOI your situation changes and you can claim more points, you should update your EOI to reflect that improved score. Updating your EOI to a higher score will reset the submission date to the later update date, but of course a higher score will ALWAYS outcompete a lower scoring EOI irrespective of submission date.

Therefore to maximise your chances you need to earn the maximum possible points. More work experience, obtain higher level qualfications, or improve your English competency.
